The village of Saina spoke out against recent claims linking their village to individuals involved in drug-related activities, saying those responsible are not from Saina and that such misinformation damages the good name of their community.
The concern arose after a person charged in a drug case, identified as Tulolo Otele, claimed he was from Saina. Village authorities have clarified that Otele is originally from Fagae‘e, Savai‘i, and not a resident or member of Saina village. This claim has caused disappointment and frustration among the people of Saina, who feel their village has been unfairly associated with illegal activities.
The Kioa Tasi o le faiupu o le Nu‘u stated in an interview that Saina has strong village laws and policies against drugs.
“Our village does not tolerate drugs in any form. We have strict rules and a clear stance to protect our people, especially our youth. We work hard to educate and guide our children, so they stay away from harmful activities,” he said. He added that the village council has long prioritised discipline, awareness, and prevention as part of its commitment to maintaining peace and safety.
The Tui Toga of Saina also emphasised that those involved in the drug cases are not from their village.
“It is disappointing to hear our village name mentioned in connection with such matters. The individuals charged are from other villages, and it is unfair for Saina to be blamed for something that does not reflect who we are,” he said.
Village leaders further expressed concern about the role of authorities, particularly the police, in verifying information before releasing or allowing such claims to circulate. They believe that a lack of careful checking contributes to misinformation and harms the reputation of innocent communities.
Residents say Saina has always been known as a peaceful village with strong values, respect for the law, and firm guidance for young people. They are calling for more responsibility in handling information related to criminal cases so that villages are not wrongly accused or associated with crimes committed by outsiders.
Saina village hopes that the public will understand their position and continue to respect the integrity and values their community stands for.
