District councils co-chair selection heads to court
The Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) is taking the government to court over its decision to appoint two chairpersons in 11 district councils.
Opposition leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said it is inappropriate and has a bad intention for the members of parliament for HRPP.
"It's only the constituencies that have HRPP members of parliament that this selection has been made, it seems like the Prime Minister still wants their supporters to take over the project instead of the trust the constituencies have given to these HRPP MPs," Tuilaepa said.
"This is part of our amendment for our legal action on the issue of the process of selecting the chairpersons, which we are against."
Tuilaepa said none of the HRPP MPs were against the million tala development project because it's the people's money and it has to go back to them.
"We never objected to the project; it's the process that has been given for the selection of the chairpersons that we are against and object to that," Tuilaepa explained.
The opposition leader said Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt is lying that four of them did not apply for the chairman posts.
"He is lying, Aeau Tima Leavai did apply, and she was rejected," he said.
"This shows the kind of leadership Laaulialemalietoa has. It is based on lies and corruption."
On Wednesday, La'aulialemalietoa announced the chairpersons for each constituency, including 11 district councils with two chairpersons.
Tuilaepa said these constituencies will not have peace because the two chairpersons will have different visions and will not agree on a particular issue.
"This will disturb the peace in the constituencies and will cause hatred within the district councils."
