Residents of Saina have expressed gratitude and optimism following the announcement of a Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Samoa to rebuild the Saina-Toamua Primary School.

The agreement, formally marked on 17 December 2025, will see the construction of a new school complex to replace the ageing and deteriorating facilities that currently serve more than 600 students.

The project, valued at approximately US$1.9 million, is funded through the US Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster, and Civic Aid program and will include 16 classrooms, a library, computer and science laboratories, staff facilities, and improved sanitation amenities.

For many parents and residents, the announcement brings relief after years of concern over student safety and learning conditions.

Sisi Ali'imalemanu, a parent from Saina, said the news was received with great joy by families in the community.

“We have been worried for a long time about the condition of the school buildings. Some classrooms are very old and unsafe, especially during heavy rain. This project gives us hope that our children will now learn in a safer and better environment,” she said.

Fa'asao Upeli described the project as a major milestone for the village and a blessing for future generations.

“Education is the foundation of our children’s future. This support from the United States and the Government of Samoa shows that our children matter. We are thankful that our concerns were heard,” Upeli said.

Another resident, Busby Uale, highlighted the importance of modern learning facilities in today’s world.

“Having a library, computer lab, and science lab will help our children compete academically. This is not just a new school, it is an investment in the future of Saina,” he said.

Ilai Ilai echoed similar sentiments, saying the partnership between Samoa and the United States reflects the value of cooperation for community development.

“This project shows the strong relationship between Samoa and the United States. We appreciate their commitment to our village and to education. Our children deserve the best,” Ilai said.

The project will involve the safe demolition of the existing school structures to make way for the new complex, which is expected to meet modern safety and educational standards and serve the community for many years to come.

Community members say the new Saina-Toamua Primary School will stand as a symbol of hope, opportunity, and progress for students and families across Saina and Toamua.
