Govt's Sunday plans have to be righteous: Opposition
Opposition Leader, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, hopes that the government's proposal to restrict businesses on Sundays is out of good heart and not something that will set the country back economically.
"What I mean is that I hope they don't want to change what we did, closing shops and the fish market on Sundays before the morning prayer services so in that way everyone can go to church," Tuilaepa said.
"I hope that they will change it out of a good heart, but not a bad intention and want to be righteous."
Tuilaepa said he has no say in what the government is trying to change or plan to do for businesses on Sundays, but all he can say is that every plan is successful if they are doing it with clean hearts.
He also raised concern about the suspension of the Press Secretary, Nanai Laveitiga Tuiletufuga, saying the decision by the Prime Minister, La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt, to suspend Nanai is dictatorial.
"That is a tactic to hide the corruption they've made in appointing the new Chief Executive Officer for Health," he added.
"What the government has done to the Press Secretary is an embarrassment to him and his family, and it's very sad the way public servants are treated."
Nanai was suspended last week following an error made on the notice for the appointment of the new Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Health, in which Toleafoa Dr Viali Lameko was first announced and later on changed to June Scanlan Lui.
Tuilaepa said the decision made to suspend Nanai was unreasonable, and it shows the government is hiding behind the "so-called" error that was made.
When contacted for a comment, Nanai said he has no comment on this issue since the investigation is ongoing.
The Opposition leader also commented on the new 39 District Council chairpersons elected, saying this is dirty politics.
"I heard the 39 chairpersons have been selected, and I tell you, the majority of them will be FAST Party members," Tuilaepa said.
Tuilaepa believes that the plan was made way before the positions were advertised, saying that the criteria showed that most of the chairman posts will be awarded to the FAST candidates.
The Prime Minister, during his weekly press conference last week, said the 39 chairpersons will be announced on Tuesday.
