Civil society leader heads Revenue Ministry
Fuimaono Vaitolo Ofoia, a seasoned civil society leader and accounting expert, was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Revenue.
Fuimaono, who has led the Samoa Umbrella for Non-Governmental Organisations (SUNGO) since 2019, brings over 30 years of public service experience to the role. He has held various positions across the country, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to civic leadership and community development.
He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Public Accounting from New England University in Australia and has earned both a Master’s in Professional Accounting and a Master’s in Business Administration from Southern Cross University in Australia.
At SUNGO, the national umbrella body for civil society organisations, Fuimaono strengthened public participation in policy development, focusing on climate resilience, civic rights, and inclusive governance. His work helped bridge the gap between civil society and government, fostering collaboration on critical social issues.
Fuimaono’s influence extends to the regional stage. Appointed Civil Society Advisory Governor for the Pacific region by the Commonwealth Foundation for the 2025-2027 term, he played a key role in the 2024 Commonwealth People’s Forum, contributing to discussions on civil society engagement and policy innovation across the Pacific.
He has also engaged in formal politics, having run as a candidate for the Vaa-o-Fonoti seat under the FAST party banner in a previous general election, reflecting his commitment to both civic and political leadership.
Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt praised Fuimaono’s extensive experience and leadership skills, highlighting that his appointment would strengthen strategic management within the Ministry of Revenue.
As CEO, Fuimaono is expected to oversee revenue initiatives, improve financial management, and enhance government service delivery. His appointment signals a commitment to blending professional expertise with community-driven governance.
With the cabinet approval now secured, Fuimaono Vaitolo Ofoia steps into his new role ready to guide the Ministry of Revenue while leveraging his decades of public service and civil society leadership to benefit all Samoans.
