Concerns have been raised about child neglect after a child was brought to the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) after being found alone, unclothed, and disoriented in a public area.
SVSG said this is a serious form of child abuse, and it continues to pose a grave threat to the well-being and development of children in Samoa.
SVSG said the recent case involving a young and vulnerable girl rescued for the second time due to physical neglect was worrying.
According to those who rescued her, the young girl appeared out of nowhere and was unable to explain her whereabouts or identify her parents or family. Her condition raised immediate concerns for her safety and well-being, prompting swift intervention.
SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang expressed deep concern over the repeated nature of the incident. She said she had not expected to see the child return under such distressing circumstances, but assured the public that the girl is now in safe hands while police investigations are underway.
“It breaks my heart to see this little girl again, but if she’s back with us, it is clear that she needs our help more than ever,” Siliniu said. “We will do our best to provide her with shelter, care, and the support she needs during this difficult time.”
She further emphasised that child neglect is not a new issue in Samoa, but one that continues to surface in villages, communities, and public spaces. While such incidents may not always be preventable, she made a heartfelt plea to parents and families to take responsibility for the safety and nurturing of their children.
SVSG continues to advocate strongly for mental health support and drug awareness, recognising these as major factors contributing to family conflict and child neglect. Upholding its mission to protect vulnerable children, SVSG has once again provided sanctuary for the young girl at the Campus of Hope as authorities carry out their investigation.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the vital role families and communities play in safeguarding the future of Samoa’s children.
