Broadcasters await decision to leave country
Australia-based broadcasters Toleafoa Sai'a Toleafoa and Ainu'u Iliganoa Savaiinaea are awaiting a court decision on whether they will be allowed to leave the jurisdiction for medical check-ups.
The couple reside in Australia and has maintained their innocence to the charges of harassment using electronic communication.
Judge Papalii Rosella Papalii adjourned the matter to be called on 10 December for the court to make its decision on their application to leave jurisdiction will be accepted or not.
The online broadcast hosts from Australia have been charged by police following recent investigations, with one arrested at the airport and the other voluntarily turning themselves in at a police station.
The individuals are linked to an online show based in Sydney, Australia. The hosts came to Samoa to visit family members.
“They were charged under the Crime Act 219 for harassment using electronic communication,” Leiataua has stated. “I know it is the host of Maota o Viiga who was charged, as well as a woman who appears on the programme.”
On several occasions, the show has allegedly made claims about government figures, including Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt and other members of the Fa’atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party, and is known to use harsh language on air.
