In her academic career, Maria Matalena Koli, 17, had never been awarded a prize in college, but on Friday, she upstaged everyone after she was named the Most Improved Student for Year 12 at Avele College.

Maria, the youngest of three siblings, is the daughter of Laisene Koli and Felotoai Koli.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer in tears, Maria said the achievement was very emotional for her.

Her mother, Laisene Koli, also expressed her pride and joy. “I praise God because this morning I was very shocked when I heard my daughter’s name being called, as I was not expecting it.

"I am grateful, and I am very, very happy and proud. Thank God for the gift of knowledge that my daughter has, and that she has received this award as she progresses well in her school. She is the baby of our family.”

She explained that as a parent, she has always pushed her daughter to work hard because her daughter’s education has always been her priority. She said she does all the chores at home so her daughter can focus on her schoolwork.

“These are tears of pride and joy for my daughter’s achievement this year,” she added.

Maria said her goal is to find a job so she can repay her parents.

“I dream that I continue my studies overseas,” she said. She hopes to study and work part-time, sending money to her parents.

Maria attended St. Mary’s Savalalo, St. Mary’s College, and then moved to Avele College, her father’s school. She is from Fagaloa and received a few awards during her primary school years.
