Thief sent to slammer for two years
A 29-year-old man from Vailele and Letogo was jailed for two years for burglary and theft at two separate homes in Vailele.
Maeli Sulusi pleaded guilty to the charges.
According to the summary of facts, Sulusi was out on bail for the first charge of burglary and theft at the home of a Spanish lady who rented this apartment at Vailele.
It was reported that Sulusi, on 18 May 2025, entered the back door of this lady's apartment while she was overseas and stole a few items and sold them for some cash. The total value of the stolen items was $3,000.
One month after the first incident, Sulusi again, on 25 July 2025, went to the home of a former member of parliament's home in Vailele and stole two ietoga worth $2000 each.
However, according to the police summary of facts, there was only one ietoga that Sulusi sold at the Flea Market for $800.
All the items belonging to the Spanish woman were reported recovered and returned to the owner.
During his sentencing, Judge Justice Loau Donald Kerslake told the defendant that one of the aggravating factors to his offending was that he was granted bail on 9 June, and he re-offended on 25 July and set foot again in Vailele, while the condition of his bail says the opposite.
Sulusi was given 12 months for each charge of burglary and theft, and to be served concurrently.
Justice Kerslake told the defendant that this should be a lesson for him if he gets out of prison to try and make his life useful and change for the sake of his parents and family.
