The Samoa Police, Prisons and Corrections Services (SPPCS) launched its Basic Rural Operations Course for members of the Tactical Operations Section, to develop skilled and capable officers dedicated to keeping communities safe across Samoa.
Deputy Commissioner Lafaitele Herbert Aati opened the course on Monday, commending participants for their dedication to professional development and encouraging them to give their best throughout the training. He said the course would challenge them physically, mentally and as a team, preparing them to perform effectively in real operational environments.
“This course will test you in many ways,” Lafaitele said. “It’s not about speed or endurance, but about using intelligence, communication and teamwork under pressure. Every skill you gain here will help you protect your colleagues and your community.”
The Deputy Commissioner said the programme aligns with the Samoa Police Service’s mission to build a professional, confident and capable workforce ready to serve the nation with integrity.
The SPPCS expressed its gratitude to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) for their ongoing partnership and support. Lafaitele thanked AFP Commander Superintendent Simon Penny for his continued efforts in strengthening law enforcement cooperation between Samoa and Australia.
Special acknowledgement was given to AFP instructors Federal Agent Brady Golding and Mitch Edwards for their expertise, professionalism and commitment to Samoa’s police training initiatives. Detective Sergeant Grant Smith and the Samoa Training Team were also recognised for their hard work and coordination in delivering the course.
During the programme, officers will be trained in field craft, movement in rural terrain, reconnaissance and operational planning. The training will conclude with a Full Mission Profile Exercise, allowing participants to put their learning into practice in a realistic operational scenario.
Lafaitele urged officers to remain resilient and support one another throughout the course.
“Through training like this, we strengthen our Service and fulfil our goal — professional, capable and confident officers serving and protecting Samoa with pride and integrity,” he said.
