Relaunching the national airline to boost tourism, drugs, and exports were among the topics discussed during a courtesy call between New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea this week, according to a government statement.

This is Laaulialemalietoa’s second courtesy call with the New Zealand government. He earlier met with Vaovasamanaia Winston Peters. Both these meetings took place at the Samoan consulate.

While the Samoan government has gone ahead with the details of the meeting and what was discussed during the courtesy call, both the New Zealand government and Luxon have said nothing on any forum. Luxon’s last social media post is about a fishing tournament, and the one before that was about Gumboot Friday.

According to the government press release, Luxon has indicated a state visit next year. It was reported that discussions were about health and security, with the focus on addressing drug-related challenges threatening Samoa and the Pacific.

It was reported that Luxon said that the price of narcotics in New Zealand was approximately 15 times higher than in North America, which has led to an increase in smuggling operations, including the use of submarines.

Laaulialemalietoa said he aimed to protect the nation's youth from drugs through the active involvement of village councils. He said that with the implementation of the new District Development Plan, the government aims to address these challenges both at the village and national levels.

It was reported by the Samoan government that Laaulialemalietoa wants to increase exports to New Zealand, targeting the Samoan and wider Pacific communities as its primary customers.

Laaulialemalietoa reportedly highlighted the a new national hospital in Tuanaimato and the establishment of another hospital in Savai'i.

“Prime Minister Luxon and I have agreed to hold further in-depth discussions in the near future. And the New Zealand Prime Minister has assured his State visit to Samoa early next year,” Laaulialemalietoa told the Government Press Secretary Saturday afternoon.
