Viliamu prepares for next challenge
What began as a way to stay active after a series of rugby injuries has turned into a national success story for Samoa’s own Ulafala Suasua Viliamu, a local bodybuilder.
Viliamu grew up focused on rugby, but injuries forced him to step away from the sport. Determined to stay fit, he started working out at home.
“After about a year, I started noticing changes in my body,” he said. “That progress really motivated me to keep going.”
Still a student at Leififi College with no job at the time, Viliamu saved his lunch money to pay for gym fees. His first coach, Chris Etuale, quickly recognised his potential and encouraged him to compete.
In 2021, while in Year 12, Viliamu entered his first bodybuilding competition and placed second in the Junior division — a moment that sparked a deep passion for the sport.
“Since then, bodybuilding has not only improved my health but also helped me grow mentally and personally,” he said.
Now, Viliamu is preparing for his next event, scheduled for 20 November at Gym 1, Tuanaimato.
"Young Samoans, start where you are, use what you have, and stay consistent. With discipline, belief in yourself, and God at the centre, progress will come. Trust the journey," he added
