Rudy Bartley, a long-time media practitioner and former president of the Journalists Association of (Western) Samoa (JAWS), passed away on Thursday, 16 October 2025.

Bartley’s career spanned more than three decades. He founded WT Media, a production company focusing on video content and multimedia services, and was active in media development and advocacy in Samoa.

He held the presidency of JAWS for four years and served as deputy president for one year. In those roles, he supported professional development among journalists in Samoa. Regionally, he participated in the Pacific Anti-Corruption Journalists Network, which encourages reporting that promotes transparency and accountability.

During his time at JAWS, Bartley spoke out against proposals to reintroduce Samoa’s criminal libel law. In 2017, he described the move as “a serious concern,” warning it could undermine press freedom. He urged alternative approaches to address defamation, such as tracking anonymous online accounts, rather than reviving punitive laws.

In 2019, Bartley also voiced concerns about a proposed Meteorology Bill that would have allowed the Samoa Meteorology Service to sue media outlets over allegedly inaccurate weather reports. He said the bill risked discouraging open reporting and suggested dialogue between the government and media instead of new legal restrictions.

JAWS President Lagi Keresoma expressed sadness at his passing, describing him as “one of the kindest and most supportive professionals in the media industry.” Former JAWS President Galumalemana Tipi Autagavaia recalled Bartley’s cheerful nature and his ability to bring warmth and humour to newsroom settings.

Press Secretariat Nanai Laveitiga Tuiletufuga also shared a tribute on social media, writing: “REST IN PEACE RUDY BARTLEY. 16th October 2025. Thank you for a lifetime of friendship and brotherhood. … Till we meet again, my friend...”

Bartley’s death marks a loss to Samoa’s media community. He will be remembered as a familiar and respected figure in local journalism, known for his long service, his work with JAWS, and his passion for media development.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
