They should be charged: Tuiafelolo on candidates at OEC

Electoral Commissioner, Tuiafelolo John Stanley says the candidates that were seen at the operation centre and the premises of the Office of the Electoral Commission should be charged under the Electoral Act 2019, section 153 (A).

On Sunday, Tuiafelolo admitted that the leading candidate of Falealili No.1, Toelupe Poumulinuku Onesemo, came to the OEC premises and asked the officials to count the special votes.

It was confirmed that he was stopped by the police in front of the gate, but he insisted on coming into the premises and was able to enter the operations centre.

Tuiafelolo said the officials and police present on Sunday told Toelupe to leave because what he was doing was illegal.

The other three Fa'atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) candidates that entered the premises were the Secretary of FAST, Va'aaoao Alofipo, Magele Sekati Fiaui and Masinalupe Makesi Masinalupe Pisi.

Tuiafelolo said these three should also be charged under section 153(A) of the Electoral Act 2019.

"They should not be entering the OEC compound, and I know they do know that part of the law," Tuiafelolo said.

Because of respect (va fealoa'i), Tuiafelolo said he met with Va'aaoao about his concerns about the final count that began on Monday.

He was asked if Va'aaoao and the other two candidates knew that "va fealoa'i" with him when they breached that part of the law by entering the premises, and he said maybe they knew.

"I don't know if they were drunk or what, but I'm pretty sure they do know about that part of the law," Tuiafelolo said.

On Monday, the police tightened security at both gates to make sure that no more candidates entered the premises.
