Samoa's national Tag Team has officially arrived in Australia, ready to represent the country at the 2025 Invitational Tag Series. The delegation of 93 members includes players, coaches, managers, and support staff, all proudly wearing the Samoa Tag colours.

Led by Samoa Tag Incorporated President, Fa’aofonu’u JP Leota, the team will compete in five divisions: Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Mixed Open, Men’s 30s, and Men’s 20s.

Fa’aofonu’u said the team is honoured to fly the Samoan flag at the international level.

“This is more than sport, it's about family, culture, and pride in who we are,” he said. “When we play, we are not just representing our country, but also our families, villages, and everyone back home.”

The journey to Australia has been one of teamwork both on and off the field. Most of the players trained in Samoa under local coaches, focusing on fitness, skills, and game knowledge. Just as important was the effort by families and supporters to raise funds for the trip.

Through food sales, raffles, church events, and help from local businesses, the team made their dream a reality. Support also came from Samoa-based sponsors including the Government of Samoa, Samoa International Finance Authority (SIFA), Eveni Sports, and Tapa Creations.

The team also includes players of Samoan heritage from Australia and New Zealand, showing the global reach of the sport and the unity of Samoans around the world.

With each of the five teams having unique roles such as the Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed Open teams are strong contenders, the Men’s 30s bring leadership and experience, and the Men’s 20s are full of energy and will grow through this opportunity.

“We’re proud of every player,” said Fa’aofonu’u. “They’ve earned their spots and will give it their all.”

The tournament is not just about winning, it's about learning, gaining experience, and growing the sport back home.

With tag becoming more popular in Samoa, especially as a non-contact sport that is fun, safe, and easy to play. All it takes is a ball, tags, and space, making it perfect for schools and villages.

The team hopes this international event will inspire more young people to get involved. Samoa Tag is already running junior games on Saturday mornings and aims to expand to schools, girls’ programs, and community clinics.

This tournament is also part of a bigger goal to prepare for the 2026 Tag World Cup and build a strong future for Tag in Samoa.

While in Australia, the team will stay connected with fans through Facebook and Instagram, church visits, and game-day meetups. With many Samoan families living in Australia, the trip also gives players a chance to connect with relatives and supporters.

“This tournament is about more than sport,” said Fa’aofonu’u. “It’s about believing in our youth, honouring our culture, and building a better future.”

Samoa Tag continues to call for support from sponsors, schools, and communities to help grow the game and support the next generation of players, coaches, and leaders.

Together, they are not only playing tag, they’re carrying the flag for Samoa.

The team’s first game is on Friday, 8th August, against Great Britain. The tournament will be held from 7th to 10th August. The Samoa Tag group will be in Australia from 2nd to 13th August.
