The Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) celebrated a major milestone with the official launch of its new project funded by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women (UN Trust Fund).

The project is titled “A Holistic Approach to Ending Violence Against Marginalised Women in Samoa”. Held at Taumeasina Island Resort, the event also marked SVSG’s 20 years of service to survivors of violence and abuse in Samoa.  The project is set for four years with a budget of US$962,975.

The launch introduced the LACIE Model—Law, Access, Culture, Inclusion, Empowerment—a transformative, whole-of-society approach to preventing gender-based violence. SVSG is one of only two Pacific grantees selected in 2025, receiving support as part of the UN Trust Fund’s US$11 million investment in 19 new global initiatives.

Delivering the keynote address, Papali’i Mele Maualaivao, UN Women Samoa Country Coordinator, praised SVSG’s legacy and vision.

“This project is a timely and strategic response to the urgent need to address violence against women in Samoa, where 87 per cent of Nofotane women have experienced intimate partner violence. SVSG’s work has already delivered measurable impact, and this new initiative builds on that strong foundation.”

Maposua Tanya Toailoa, SVSG Board Chair, provided an overview of the project’s goals and emphasised the importance of community-driven solutions.

“The LACIE Model is not just a framework; it’s a movement. It reflects our belief that change must come from within our communities, grounded in our culture, and supported by law and access to justice," she said.

"The initiative also aims to empower families and young people to be agents of change. Positive parenting and cultural pride are key to breaking cycles of violence.  This funding allows SVSG to scale our impact while ensuring transparency and accountability. It’s an investment in safety, dignity, and hope.”

The event concluded with a discussion session facilitated by SVSG for its 13 district representatives. Attendees expressed optimism and solidarity for the journey ahead.
