Samoa continues Mini Games medal streak

Team Samoa continues to demonstrate remarkable athletic excellence at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, bringing the nation’s total medal count to 59, comprising 27 gold, 13 silver, and 19 bronze medals. 

The second week of competition saw several outstanding performances across various sports, solidifying Samoa’s position among the top contenders.

Samoan weightlifters were once again a highlight of the weekend’s events. Iunarria Sipaia claimed three gold medals in the Women’s 86kg+ category, simultaneously setting three new Pacific records.

Lesila Fiapule earned three silver medals in the same division, reflecting a strong Samoan presence on the weightlifting podium.

In the Women’s 77kg division, Avatu Opeloge secured three silver medals for Samoa. Meanwhile, Sanele Moa captured a gold medal in the Men’s 110kg+ Snatch event, further boosting the nation’s medal tally.

Team Samoa’s swimmers delivered commendable performances. Solomona Hamilton won gold in the Men’s 200m Backstroke, while Nafanua Hamilton collected a total of seven medals, one gold, two silver, and four bronze, in various events, showcasing her versatility and endurance in the pool.

Hector Junior Langkilde earned one silver and three bronze medals, adding to Samoa’s swimming success.

Talia Saumamao continued to impress with six medals, one silver and five bronze, while Salani Sa’aga, only 17 years of age, captured five medals, including one silver and four bronze, establishing herself as a promising talent in Samoan swimming.

The Samoa women’s 3x3 basketball team showed resilience throughout the Oceania competition. The following are their game results across the four stops:

  • Stop 1 Game 1: Samoa 22 – Tahiti 10
  • Stop 1 Game 9: Samoa 15 – Tonga 17
  • Stop 2 Game 3: Northern Mariana 19 – Samoa 17
  • Stop 2 Game 11: Samoa 21 – Solomon Islands 13
  • Stop 3 Game 1: Samoa 22 – Tahiti 10
  • Stop 3 Game 9: Samoa 10 – Solomon Islands 17
  • Stop 4 Game 1: Samoa 19 – Tahiti 17

Team Samoa’s Beach Volleyball squad made national history by qualifying for the 5th-place final, marking the team’s best performance to date. This came after a hard-fought loss against Fiji in a thrilling quarterfinal match.

In athletics, Team Samoa’s competitors also made notable efforts: 
Sierra Keil placed 10th in the Women’s 100m Semi-Final, recording a time of 12.93 seconds.

In the Men’s 100m Semi-Finals, the results were as follows:

  • Johnny Key: 8th place (11.00 seconds)
  • Asalemo Fanolua: 15th place (11.44 seconds)
  • Taitaifono Samasoni: 17th place (11.53 seconds)

As of Monday, 7 July, the Triathlon competitions have officially commenced. Team Samoa remains determined as they enter the new week, with high hopes of further enhancing their medal tally.
