The Samoa Red Cross Society began its World Blood Donor Day celebration this week by partnering with the Land Transport Authority to offer first aid training for LTA staff, ensuring they are ready to respond to emergencies on the road.

Although World Blood Donor Day is officially on Saturday, the celebration was held earlier due to the involvement of Red Cross staff in weekend events. The theme for this year is “Give Blood, Give Hope – Together We Can Save Lives.”

Namulau’ulu Tautala Maualaivao, General Manager of the Samoa Red Cross Society, thanked the LTA team for taking part in the first aid training and the blood donation drive.

“You are lifesavers not only because of the blood you give, but also because of the first aid skills you now have,” she said.

“God shows His love through your willingness to help others. One unit of blood can save 3 to 5 lives. That’s something we must always remember.”

She explained the importance of blood: red blood cells help patients who have lost blood, and the yellow liquid called plasma contains minerals and proteins that also help patients recover. She also reminded people that platelets in the blood are vital, especially during outbreaks like dengue fever, where some patients bleed heavily. Platelets help stop that bleeding.

Namulau’ulu encouraged trained first aiders to share their knowledge with others so that more people can be ready to help save lives.

LTA’s Principal in Drive Training, Fa’aeteete Lene, also spoke at the event, expressing thanks to the Red Cross for inviting LTA to be part of the celebration.

“The theme speaks volumes. Blood donation can save lives,” she said.

“We are proud to stand with all donors and thank the Red Cross for giving us first aid training this week. These are skills that help not only at work but also in our homes and communities.”

She praised LTA staff who took part in the blood drive, saying their commitment showed the true meaning of public service.

The event ended with a reminder to everyone in Samoa: donating blood is a simple act that makes a big difference. Just one blood unit, around 450 to 500 mL, can help save several lives. And with an average adult having 5 to 8 litres of blood, giving a small amount can be lifesaving for someone else.

Keep donating. Keep saving lives.
