A young woman with Samoan heritage, Makaylah Washington, successfully completed one of the most challenging achievements in the United States military, graduating from the United States Marine Corps boot Camp as Private First Class.

It is a 13-week training, which is the toughest of all military services. In which Makaylah did not just pass, but also earning the sharpshooter badge, proving her excellent skills and strong commitment.

She is the daughter of retired Chief Master Sergeant Matamua Loretta, the first Samoan woman to achieve this high rank in the United States Air Force, and retired Senior Master Sergeant Mark Washington. Her mother, originally from Otara, Auckland, New Zealand, and her father, from Little Rock, Arkansas, are very proud of her.

Makaylah also honours her grandparents, Peka Tuiala of Faleasiu and the late Reverend Ulufotu Matamua Fraser of Satitoa, Falelatai and Salelologa, Savaii. She thanked them for their sacrifices in moving from Samoa and New Zealand to America, giving their family a better life. Their love and prayers, she said, have helped her reach this proud moment.

Makaylah's achievement continues a legacy of strength and service. Her mother, Matamua Loretta, recently retired in 2023 after 28 years in the US Air Force. Making history as the first Samoan woman to reach the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.

Matamua enlisted in Hawaii in 1995 and worked hard to climb the ranks. “One of my proudest moments was being a Samoan and being promoted to Chief Master Sergeant in 2020,” she said in an earlier interview.

Matamua said she never focused on being the "first" Samoan woman in her role. She simply worked hard to be the best airman she could be.

Now, her daughter Makaylah carries the torch forward, proudly wearing the US Marine uniform and continuing her family's legacy of service and sacrifice.
