Poor exams results worries church

Congregational Christian Church Samoa expressed concern over the poor results in national exams such as the Samoa School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) and the Samoa National Junior School Certificate (SNJSC) of students attending church-run schools.

This was discussed as one of the matters at the Malua Conference this year. While the results of all subjects were poor, Mathematics and English pass rates were the ones they were most concerned about.

The percentages show that up to 90 per cent of students who sat the SNJSC exams last year failed English and Maths, and also up to 90 per cent also failed science.

The Director for Education in his report stated that this is something the Office of Education is looking at to develop the students, especially with Mathematics and English, in which almost all students at each level failed.

The Education Committee has advised the Director of Education that this is a serious issue where they have to come up with a solution, like having workshops for all teachers who are teaching these subjects to find new strategies to teach the students.

For Tuasivi College, out of 34 Year 10 students who sat the SNJSC Exams, only six students passed English, no student passed Communication English and also no students were able to pass Mathematics.

Leulumoega Fou College had 55 students who sat English for the SNJSC Exams, and only five passed, and no one passed the Mathematics exams.

The same goes for Maluafou College for the SNJSC Exams last year, out of the 74 students who sat the exams, no one was able to pass Maths, General Maths, Accounting, Biology, Chemistry and General Science.

All these results were taken into account by the church during its Annual Conference this year and have advised the Education Committee to look into this and find solutions to the problem, and report back to the church.

The CCCS has six schools that cater for the children of Samoa, no matter what denomination they are from.

These schools include Maluafou College, Leulumoega Fou College, Nu'uausala College, Tuasivi College, Papauta Girls College and Vocational Technical College.
