Abandoned embassy turning into eyesore

The Chinese Embassy says it is reviewing the future of its old diplomatic compound on Eveni Street in Vailima, as the site continues to draw attention for its visibly deteriorated condition.

The once-active embassy building now stands abandoned, with overgrown grass, weeds creeping into the structures, and an unmaintained driveway—all visible from the roadside.

In response to questions about the state of the property, the Chinese Embassy issued a brief statement: “It has been under regular maintenance for your information. We are studying its future role in due course.”

Despite the embassy’s claim of regular upkeep, the encroaching greenery and apparent neglect have raised questions from passersby and residents in the area. The embassy has not confirmed whether the site will be repurposed, redeveloped, or demolished.

The building is believed to have remained vacant since the Chinese diplomatic mission relocated to its newer, larger compound in Avele in February 2024. While there were reports of workers mowing the lawns near the roadside before the start of this year, that maintenance appears to have stopped, allowing the grass and weeds to become overgrown.

The embassy has yet to provide a timeline for any decisions regarding the future use of the Vailima property.
