Ports introduces secured parking fee

The Samoa Ports Authority (SPA) has confirmed that the installation of a new boom gate at Mulifanua Wharf is to regulate traffic, particularly after hours.
In addition, SPA has introduced a $10 per night parking fee for vehicles utilising the newly established secured parking facilities at Mulifanua and Salelologa domestic ports.
SPA released a statement after queries from Samoa Observer regarding the installation of a boom gate at Mulifanua and new charges which were never notified to the public. The issue was highlighted a week ago by the newspaper.
“For the secured parking space we are charging is a new initiative for those that wish to park overnight at the new secured car parking space, and it is only for those who wish to use this service but others can park their vehicles at the open space for free," stated the General Manager of SPA So’oalo Falelima Kuresa So’oalo.
"While the wharf is closed in the evening, the secured parking space guarantees safe parking of vehicles, which are under the watch of the Authority’s securities during the night,” he further stated.
As stated in the press release, since taking over the management of domestic ports from the Samoa Shipping Corporation on Oct. 1, 2022, SPA has completed several upgrades and continues to implement new developments.
Recent improvements include the installation of security boom gates, new public restrooms at Mulifanua, and enhanced car parking facilities at Mulifanua and Salelologa.
"Mulifanua Wharf aims to regulate traffic flow, particularly after hours. The Authority has assured the public that there are no fees for entry to the wharf," stated the press release.
It remains unclear whether the revenue board has reviewed the newly introduced overnight parking fee. Additionally, SPA is enhancing vessel berthage, maintaining navigation buoys, and improving overall cleanliness at the ports. These upgrades align with the Authority’s commitment to providing efficient and secure port services for travelers between Upolu and Savai'i.
