SVSG helps men in crisis

It's not only helping women and children who are facing abuse but now the Samoa Victim Support Group has stepped up to assist men in need of assistance.

A young man in his early 20s was confirmed to seek assistance from SVSG earlier last week.

SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang said the young man was banned from his village by the village council for a village rule that he broke.

Siliniu could not confirm what the young man did but she said this person was told by the village councils that he could not come back to the village unless he gave 100 pigs and $1000.

"It's sad to see these kinds of penalties by some of the villages, and what I believe is that by doing this, the village is abusing its people," Siliniu said.

"I don't think this is the right way to deal with people breaking village rules because most of the people do not work and they can't afford these kinds of village penalties."

Siliniu confirmed that they've helped this young man, who really wants to go back to his family and village but cannot afford the village penalty.

"We will approach the village and seek assistance in bringing this young man back to his family and to ask them for forgiveness," Siliniu revealed.

Siliniu believes that there should be other ways village councils should penalise youth nowadays, like letting them serve free hours of community service for the village or at a faifeau's land rather than imposing heavy penalties which result in loss of homes, unemployment and crime.

She said SVSG was dealing with increasing sexual abuse cases, attempted suicide, mothers who are abused in their families and now have been dealing with cases involving men.

Their helpline 800-7874 is available 24 hours seven days a week for anyone who needs help with any issue in families, village or even churches.
