A new era of youth leadership

The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development (M.W.C.S.D.) is embracing a holistic approach to empower young leaders to shape the future of Samoa.
In anticipation of the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Forum during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M.), the ministry organised a transformative Youth Development Day, bringing together nearly 300 enthusiastic participants aged 18 to 35 from both Upolu and Savai'i.
The "Toe timaga le upega - Youth Development Day" dubbed the dawn of a new era, marked a significant shift in focus towards youth engagement.
The responsible Minister, Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio'o addressed the attendees, assuring them that the ministry is committed to inspiring and empowering youth, ensuring they no longer feel sidelined in societal matters.
"This is your time," Mulipola declared passionately. "Stand up, speak out, and have your say. You are the future of Samoa, and your voice matters."
The event provided a safe and nurturing environment for young people to articulate their aspirations, confront challenges, and engage in meaningful discussions about their roles in shaping Samoa's future.
Mulipola shared her life experiences, hoping to inspire participants to pursue their dreams. She listened attentively to their questions about accessing funding for projects and becoming involved in community decision-making, fostering an atmosphere of support and engagement.
Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O.) of the Ministry, Loau Donina Va'a, reinforced this commitment, emphasizing the importance of confidence in pursuing one's passions.
"Stand up and be the change we need," she urged the youth, highlighting the need for them to develop their skills and talents. She introduced the Sei Share Mentoring Program, a zero-cost initiative rooted in the Samoan concept of "alofa," which pairs young leaders with experienced mentors, fostering love, support, and new opportunities.
The day was filled with notable outcomes, including the nomination of members for the Samoa Youth Advisory Board, symbolising a commitment by the nation’s youth to lead Samoa into a brighter future.
In engaging work cafés, mock press conferences, and discussions with Minister Mulipola and CEO Loau Donina Va'a, young participants shared their enthusiasm and commitment to leading with intention.
Tito Malupo Taufao, a participant from Savai'i, expressed gratitude for the ministry's efforts in empowering youth across Samoa. He appreciated the safe space provided for open dialogue on issues affecting young people and called for accountability in the government's commitment to youth empowerment reflected in the annual budget. Taufao acknowledged the encouragement and feedback from the Minister and C.E.O., expressing excitement for the future.
As Samoa stands on the brink of a new era, the commitment of the M.W.C.S.D. to empower its youth shines brightly.
