Caretaker government illegal: FAST

The Fa'atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) is maintaining that the caretaker government should not be in control, as they are illegal.

This was uttered by FAST chairman La'auli Leuatea Schmidt during the "Fofola le Fala" programme on Friday. He said the failed budget for the 2025/2026 means it was introduced by a failed government.

La'auli believes that the caretaker government is unlawful, and is the outcome of being in power, knowing that they (caretaker government) know they shouldn't be in power.

"As we said before, and we say this again, the caretaker government is unlawful, and this is the outcome of what we meant by that is that the budget they've been trying to propose failed," La'auli said.

"My question is, how can a government with a minority be in power?", How is this the caretaker government still in power and yet they know they are there illegally?"

However, according to the Constitution, the expulsion of the members from their party does not mean a vacation of their seat. The Constitution also states that after the dissolution of parliament, the executive remains as caretaker.

La'auli, in elaborating on this issue when asked by the media on what he thinks of the failed budget that was proposed in Parliament, said they cannot do this for Samoa forever.

He was referring to a saying that "Let's continue to do things wrongly" (Tatou alu sese ai pea fa'apea).

He said this has to stop, and the snap general election is the answer to this.

"Let Samoa be the judge of all this nonsense," La'auli added.

In addition to the issue, FAST treasurer Mulipola Anarosa Molio'o said a good example of a government that is breaking the Rule of Law is the third million payout that was halted.

Mulipola said they've stopped the payout last week, and on the same day, during the early hours of the morning, they again put green lights to the payout.

"What kind of government does that?" she said.

"This shows that the caretaker government is not sure of what they're doing, and Fiame during our tour has been singing and telling people about the Rule of Law and what now?"

Mulipola said the budget for this payout was passed by Parliament, and the caretaker government knew that putting it on hold was illegal.

"It seems that the caretaker government is not sure about their decision-making, and it shows in the outcome of the failed budget," she added.
