An elderly man from Lefagaoali'i in Savai'i was admitted to the hospital after he was allegedly beaten, tied to a stick and carried away from his place of residence by untitled men of the village who were executing an order from the matai of the village council.

The incident was confirmed by the Police Commissioner, Auapa'au Logoitino Filipo in response to queries from this newspaper on Saturday.

A video of the incident was also circulated on social media platforms where the man is being carried away from his house.

According to Auapa'au, the incident was reported from the police in Savai'i and they are investigating the matter.

"The information given to us was that the man was taken to the main hospital in Savai'i," Auapa'au said.

"According to the statements provided by the villagers to the police, this man was banished by the village not once but twice.

"The village council unanimously agreed to have the old man removed from the village. However, the man did not comply and insisted on staying in the village.

"The second time the village met and asked him to leave, he didn't listen.

"Therefore, according to our preliminary findings, the matai of the village instructed the untitled men of the village to remove the man and to punish him for refusing to accept the decision of the village council.

"Our police outpost in Fagamalo was informed by concerned residents who witnessed what happened and police were asked to step in and help.

"The man was admitted to the hospital immediately and we don't know if he's still at the hospital at this point."

Auapa'au also confirmed that the police in Savai'i are still investigating the matter and are looking to arrest the untitled men and the matai who allegedly assaulted the old man.

"I was informed this morning (Saturday) that police in Savai'i would be arresting people in relation to this incident.

"So I would have an update on this matter once I get any new information from our team in Savai'i."

A video of the unfortunate incident has been circulated on social media. The video shows untitled men and matai of the village of Lefagaoali'i walking into the old man's house and tying him up.

His hands and legs were tied and they hung him on a long stick and carried him out of his house.

The men were heard saying they have already prepared an "umu" or oven to cook the old man. Some men were heard saying, "This is what you get for having no respect towards the church minister. You dare not play around in this village."

The untitled men of the village carried him onto the road as by-standers stood by and watched.
