Family and friends of Mausali Nu’umali’i Tito gathered at the Princessa Restaurant at Moto'otua last Saturday to celebrate the matriarch's 70th birthday.

Often seen as a "superhero" in the eyes of her children due to her good works, the birthday celebration was led by the eldest of her seven children, New Zealand-based Nuumalii Folorina Tito, who travelled to Samoa for the occasion.

“She has lived most of her life here in Samoa and being here with her is a blessing and I want to thank my husband who was the backbone of this project and made it possible for Mum,” said Nuumalii. “She is very family-oriented and it shows with how many people showed up to celebrate her birthday.

"She has 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren which is a testament to how blessed she is with loved ones. She is loved by everyone and she has such a loving heart."

According to Nuumalii, her mother is a typical Samoan mother who loves her family and she is like a "wonder woman" to all of them.

"We are honouring her today just to show that we appreciate her so much," she added.

Nuumalii said that her mother is blessed to have reached the age of 70 and she prays that she lives "another 70 years" so she can spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family's original plan was to celebrate their mother's 70th birthday in New Zealand. However, Nuumalii said her mother would rather celebrate her milestone in Samoa, where most of her family members are located.

“Thank you mum for loving us and I love coming back home to see you. Even though I stay overseas now, I know that this is where home is because you are here," she said and started to tear up, thinking about how much her mother, has done for her.

Mausali said that her family made the day all about her and she is very thankful for what they have done for her.

“Praise god for another year added to my life and as I turn 70 I’m blessed with how much love everyone has shown me," she said.

While the family matriarch turned another year older, she energetically danced to the music and greeted her family and friends who attended her birthday to celebrate her life.
