Four electoral officers investigated
Four electoral officers allegedly responsible for the errors in four polling booths in Savai'i will be investigated after the official count is completed.
He said the probe would also ascertain if there was a political motive behind the action of the officials.
It is alleged that the electoral officers placed the tally sheets inside the ballot box and sealed it. This caused a delay in the vote count as the boxes could not be opened, as it would be considered tampering.
The Electoral Commissioner Tuiafelolo John Stanley said there was nothing to hide. He said these electoral officers would face disciplinary proceedings.
He said the repercussions of the disciplinary action and investigation could lead to these officials never working in a general election again. He said their allowance would also be held.
Tuiafelolo said these four officials will be called in once the official count is over, and questioned about their actions.
He said all electoral officers were trained and warned to be politically neutral when carrying out their duties.
Tuiafelolo said the OEC lawyers will discuss the matters with the four officials. He said the finding could even lead to charges because their actions violates the Electoral Act as well.
