Suicide is never the answer
Suicide is a growing concern among young people today, with many feeling trapped by bullying, family struggles, and overwhelming emotions.
It’s heartbreaking to see lives lost to something that could have been prevented if only they had reached out or if someone had noticed their pain.
Young people face immense pressure, at school, online, and even at home. Bullying, whether in person or through social media, can make someone feel isolated and worthless. Family issues, financial struggles, and personal challenges can add to this weight, making life seem unbearable. But the truth is, no matter how dark things may feel, suicide is not the answer.
If you are struggling, please know that your life is valuable. You might feel like no one understands or cares, but that is far from the truth. There are people who love you and want to help, you just need to take that first step and reach out. Talk to a friend, a teacher, a counsellor, or someone you trust. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Sometimes, the signs of suicidal thoughts are not obvious. Some people hide their pain behind a smile. This is why it’s important to check in on your friends and family. A simple “Are you okay?” can make a difference. Let them know they are not alone, and remind them that no matter what they are going through, things will get better.
The American Institute of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has stated that suicides among young people continue to be a serious problem. Suicide was the second leading cause of death for children, adolescents, and young adults aged 15 to 24 years old.
The majority of children and adolescents who attempt suicide have a significant mental health disorder, usually depression. Among younger children, suicide attempts are often impulsive. They may be associated with feelings of sadness, confusion, anger, or problems with attention and hyperactivity.
Among teenagers, suicide attempts may be associated with feelings of stress, self-doubt, pressure to succeed, financial uncertainty, disappointment, and loss. For some teens, suicide may appear to be a solution to their problems.
Depression and suicidal feelings are treatable mental disorders.
Suicide is not a solution to temporary problems. Pain and hardship do not last forever, but the impact of suicide does. If you are struggling, please reach out. If you notice someone acting differently, check on them. Your words of kindness and support could save a life.
To the youth reading this, your story is not over. You are loved, you are important, and you are not alone. Stay strong and keep holding on.
