Widespread support for Pacific Games bid
Samoa is one of three Pacific countries vying to host the 2019 Pacific Games. As of yesterday, Guam and Tahiti have also put in bids after Tonga withdrew. Do you support the government’s bid for the Games? And why? Talimalie Uta asked people in today’s Street Talk and this is what they said:
Eteleni Tulufai, 67 Malie
It’s up to our government. If Samoa wants to host the South Pacific Games, then I’ll support whatever decision they make. Our Prime Minister and his government have all the authority. Therefore, if they want to bring over the Pacific Games in 2019 then I will support it. Since they are the ones who are running everything, I believe it will be a good step forward.
Asia Simone, 53 Leauva’a
Of course it’s a very good idea. Hosting the Pacific Games in 2019 will not only benefit our country financially but it will also encourage our youth to challenge themselves by looking at other Pacific countries’ athletes. This is also a good chance for families to get together and experience such an event and make memories, mark it as a story of their lives.
Rebecca Faaumuina, 21 Matavai Safune
It’s a great idea. It allows more people to come to our country and to experience and see the beauty that we have in store. Hosting the Pacific Games in 2019 is a very good way for us to attract more tourists and promote our beautiful Samoa to overseas countries.
Faauma Taalo, 39 Tanugamanono
I sell chips for a living; therefore hosting the Pacific Games again is very helpful for me because it will increase the sales for my small business and I will earn more from it. The more people coming in the more customers I will get to sell my chips to. So it’s beneficial for me.
Peter Robinson, 29 Salepouae Saleimoa
I would love to have the Pacific Games hosted in our country. It is going to be a very good set up for us to tell other countries that we can host any major event. Another beneficial opportunity for our country is the increase of our economic status, based on the money that our government is going to earn from the athletes. From previous Pacific Games, as a taxi driver I made good money from it and that is why I believe that if we host it again it will be good and beneficial for our country and so as our people.
Savelio Aukusitino, 35, Leauvaa
Yes, we should host the Pacific games. We did it before and I don’t see anything wrong with it. This way we will gain more money from it. I hope we get the opportunity to host it again.
