LEEDS, England (AP) — Joe Root and Joe Denly were rebuilding England's innings after the early departures of openers Jason Roy and Rory Burns as the team chases 359 to win the third test against Australia and keep alive its hopes of regaining the Ashes.

England was 90-2, still needing 269 runs for an unlikely victory at Headingley.

David Warner took his fifth catch of the match to remove Burns (7) off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood. Roy was then bowled by Pat Cummins for 8, the latest failure for a batsman whose place as opener might now be under threat.

Root (41) and Denly (30) have settled things down with a 75-run partnership, pushing England past its paltry first-innings score of 67.

England trails 1-0 in the five-match series and cannot reclaim the Ashes if it falls 2-0 behind with two tests remaining.

Australia was bowled out for 246 in its second innings, having resumed Saturday on 171-6.

Marnus Labuschagne made 80 for Australia — one run off his highest test score — before being run out. Jofra Archer, who took 6-43 in the first innings, claimed two of the four wickets to fall Saturday to finish 2-40 and Ben Stokes had 3-56.
