The Manu Samoa Sevens Head Coach, Muliagatele Brian Lima has announced his squad for the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town, South Africa.

The World Cup from 9–11 September has Manu Samoa 7's team going up against Uganda on 9 September in the pre-round fixture at 9:29 pm (local time) and is going to be the third match of the pre-rounds of 16.

The 13-man squad include: Melani Matavao (co-captain), Va'afauese Apelu Maliko (co-captain), Vaovasa Afa Su'a (co-captain), Paul Eti Slatter, Neueli Leitufia, Motu Opetai, Owen Niue, Paul Scanlan, Steve Onosa'i, Uaina Sione, Levi Milford, Taunu'u Niulevaea, and Malolo Luteru.

The Management team include: Muliagatele Brian Lima, Tausa Fa'amaoni Lalomilo, Tuala Pat Leota, Junior Narayan and Jon Garcia.

The Rugby World Cup Sevens this year will operate in a straight knockout format. This means that every match counts and that no team can afford a slow start.

Each of the 16 teams contesting the men’s pre-round of 16 will be focused solely on winning their opening match and maintaining their hopes of a triumphant weekend at DHL Stadium.

This means that if the national team win their first match against Uganda 7's they will advance to play Round 16 matches and from there, they can advance to play for Championships if they win the match in their second game. However, if they lose their first match they will go down and play bowl.

There are 31 teams set to participate during this year's World Cup 7's. The eight (8) pre-qualified teams from the Rugby World Cup Sevens (2018) are New Zealand, France, Australia, U.S.A., Argentina, Scotland, England and Fiji.

The Manu Samoa 7s team finished the Los Angeles 7s in fourth place last month and was ranked ninth overall at the closing of the 2021–2022 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
