"This is for my family and Samoa": Ato

Commonwealth Games boxing silver medalist Seua'i Ato Plodzicki Faoagali had dedicated his medal to his family and Samoa, following his final fight in the early hours of Monday.

Fighting in the under 92-kg category, the 23-year-old Sydney-based boxer made it all the way to the final and took on England’s Lewis Williams early Monday morning but lost to the British boxer.

In an exclusive interview with the Samoa Observer from Birmingham, England on Monday night, Seua'i said that he felt like "he won" the match.

He said he prepared well and trained hard in his bid to win gold for Samoa but to fall short to come away with a silver medal which he described as a "bittersweet moment".

According to Seua'i, he was prepared to "attack right from the start to finish" as he walked into the ring during the finale.

"Like I mentioned above, I’m satisfied with my performance and I felt like I did enough to win," he told the Samoa Observer. "All glory to God and this is for my family and of course Samoa 100 per cent.”

So what's next for the promising Samoan boxer? Seua'i said it was to rest his body as four fights in one week has taken its toll.

"What’s next is to rest the body for a month because four fights in one week took its toll and then back to training for the next tournament wherever Samoa sends me."

Looking forward, the Commonwealth Games silver medalist then appealed to the Samoa Government to consider giving financial support to boxers such as himself to fund preparation in the lead up to major tournaments.

"Like most grassroots sports like amateur boxing, it is funds to better prepare my teammates and I for these major tournaments,” he said.

"For this tournament my two teammates and I did not attend any international training camps or international tournaments in the lead up like all top nations.

"All we did was train in my backyard, in the park and when we found sponsors we were finally  able to access a boxing gym to train.

"So yes please help me and other Samoan boxers with funds and you can imagine what we can do with all the backing like our major national sports get."

Local British newspaper Leamington Observer reported that in a close first round, Plodzicki-Faoagali started strongly before Williams began to land his jab and eventually took the round on all five of the scorecards.

And Williams claimed a similarly close second round as he landed the cleaner shots against his more experienced opponent.

“The 6ft 7in heavyweight landed freely in the final round, which included a brutal right uppercut which lifted Plodzicki-Faoagal off his feet, to confirm his status as Commonwealth champion.”

On his way to his gold medal victory, the British boxer beat Pakistan’s Nazeer Khan in the preliminary round, Papua New Guinea’s Arthur Lavalou in the quarter-final bout and Australia’s Edgardo Coumi in the semi-final to face Plodzicki-Faoagali in the final.
