Spicey eyes Teuila volleyball finals
The Vailima Teuila Volleyball competition is nearing the end of its preliminary matches with the finals scheduled to be held on Friday and Saturday.
And the Spicey Volleyball Club team of Siusega is setting their sights on winning the Teuila title.
Spicey won Division 2 of the National Volleyball League by Samoa Volleyball Incorporated held last August. So far the team has bagged two wins and one loss against last year’s defending champions Fagali’i Volleyball Club.
In their most recent match against Supakako from Le’auva’a, Spicey lost the first set after a close battle that saw Supakako win 15-13 in the opening set.
The boys from Si’usega, however, weren’t deterred with giving away the first set as they came back with a vengeance and took the second set 15-12.
In the third and deciding set, both teams went tit for tat as they were tied three times during the final set. But in the end Spicey proved too strong for Supakako to clinch the final set 15-13.
After winning their encounter with Supakako, Spicey’s captain Taylor Crichton said he is proud of how his team fought hard to keep their hopes of claiming this year’s Teuila title alive.
“One of the areas of the game we worked hard on during training was our backline attacks and quick attacks which really were evident in our match against Supakako tonight,” said Mr. Crichton.
"We dug deep in the third set and the boys really gave their 120 percent effort,” he said.
“I praise and thank God for his wisdom and guidance because without him we wouldn't have been able to secure the win.”
The President of Samoa Volleyball Incorporated, Leute Mataipule in an interview with the Samoa Observer said that this year’s tournament is nearing the knockout stages scheduled this weekend and the competition is fierce with all teams keen on winning the title.
“The level of intensity in every match is heating up because every team is looking to win the Teuila title, we thank Vailima Breweries, Vodafone Samoa, and all our sponsors because with their assistance we wouldn’t have been able to hold this event."
