The colleges and schools vying for top honours in this year’s Zone A Athletics Competition are excited to be back on the field after a two year absence.

Aleipata College Principal and the Zone A Colleges Federation President, Saniiee Matamu, told the Samoa Observer that it has been two years since they last held the tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We have been preparing for the competition since the start of the school year and all our young athletes were really looking forward to competing in this year's Zone A Athletics," she said.

"We the principals as well as the teachers are immensely proud of the efforts our students have showcased and have put on display as seen throughout today's event."

According to Ms Matamu, at times she wished there was an established pathway for Samoa’s college-based athletes.

"I just wish that there was an established pathway our aspiring athletes can take so that they can further pursue their love of sports because most of them don't compete anymore after they finish their four years in college," she said.

On Wednesday hundreds of students converged on the Apia Park Stadium for the tournament in order to see their champion boys and girls athletes.

In the Junior Girls Division, the title went to Anoama'a College while the Junior Boys title was claimed by Vaimauga College.

The Intermediate Girls' first place was also taken by Anoama'a College, with Samoa College clinching the Intermediate Boys title.

In the Senior Girls', Falealili College took the top spot with Avele College securing first place in the Senior Boys competition.

A teacher and coach of the Avele Athletics team, Ta'avili Tariu said he is extremely proud of his team's effort at the Zone A meet, especially the Avele College Senior Boys team who is this year's winner in the division.

"A big fa'amalo to the boys for taking the senior title in the boys' division, now we have our eyes set on the National Champ of Champs event next month and hope that we get the same result as what we achieved today," he said.
