Netballers subjected to random checks

Netball Samoa has begun random checks of both players and parents attending its Oriana Development clinics for COVID-19 using a thermometer gun.

Acknowledging that while Samoa remains one of few countries in the world that are COVID-19 free, netball’s governing body said in a statement that the decision to do random checks is part of their effort to raise awareness on the global pandemic.

"Netball Samoa as part of their development clinics are turning to using thermometer guns as a preventative measure and raising the awareness of a practice that may become a norm for us all during these challenging times,” the organisation said in a statement.

“Even though Samoa is COVID-19 free, this is an initiative in support of our relevant Ministries and organisations on their awareness and advocacy programs.”

The random checks also assures the wellbeing of their young netballers who are participating in their tournaments.

Netball Samoa C.E.O., Rosemarie Loma, said young netballers were initially uncomfortable but they now accept it after the new practice was explained to them.

"Random checks are performed on players and parents that attend our Oriana Development clinics.  At first the young netballers were scared and curious but after explaining the whys, they are now more comfortable at this new practice,” she said.

“Infrared thermometer guns will assist and identify someone who is hot and merits a closer look by their doctor.”

A “fizz free” environment has also been declared for Netball Samoa-sanctioned tournaments, which the CEO says encourages their young players to embrace healthy eating habits.

"Netball Samoa also takes pride in promoting a fizz free environment for tournaments and encourages our young netballers to follow healthy eating habits," she added.

Netball Samoa has acknowledged the support of Zhenna Chan Mow Faaiuga who provided the health kits for their use.

"Netball Samoa wishes to acknowledge the kind donation of an infrared thermometer gun by Zhenna Chan Mow Faaiuga of Niu Pharmacy and for her continuous support to Netball Samoa," Ms Loma.
