Samoa's men's team ran out 8-6 winners over Fiji in their Pacific Games touch rugby round three matchup at St Joseph's College, Alafua.

The win leaves them two from two after an earlier 16-1 defeat of Tokelau.

Coach Peter Shefford said he'll take the days' results but there is room for improvement.

“We came in looking to build everyday, obviously don’t wanna peak 'til Wednesday, so that’s our key."

He said the tight game against Fiji was the wakeup call they needed after the easy win over Tokelau.

“Bring them down to earth a bit, realise we’ve still gotta pick our game up and we can’t afford to let those little things go.

“Against the lesser teams you can get away with some sloppy play and we did this morning.

“We talked about this one, we knew it was going to be tougher."

Shefford said his side were good for two thirds of the game, but Fiji put the heat on and got into their heads a little.

“They’ve confronted it, sort of faced their fears and I think we’ll be stronger for it tomorrow.

“We’ve just gotta remember what worked for us and what didn’t, and concentrate on the positives.

“Attack wise there’s plenty of strike power there, if we execute well we can score.“

He said they need to fix a few mental lapses and their discipline on defence.
