Smaller Team Samoa due to money woes

A total of 58 athletes and officials will be travelling to the Mini Games in Palau this month as financial constraints have limited the participation of a bigger team, said the President of the Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork.

"As of now, Team Samoa for Palau 2025 is all set and ready. The team has been selected and finalised. We have 58 in total, including athletes and officials. It will be a small team due to the lack of finances. We have selected the best of the best, taking into account selection criteria based on merit. The team is scheduled to depart on 26 June," he said.

The selection criteria are winning gold medals from past Pacific Games and Oceania Championships. They are still in the process of securing funding. In a recent interview, Tuaopepe mentioned that it was expensive to take a team to Palau. SASNOC's mission for Palau is that every athlete selected must win gold.

The Pacific Mini Games are a continental multi-sport event contested by countries and territories located in Oceania. The event has been held every four years since the inaugural games in Honiara, Solomon Islands, in 1981. It was known as the South Pacific Mini Games prior to 2009.

In the last Pacific Games held in Honiara, Solomon Islands, Samoa finished fourth, with a total of 34 gold and 76 medals. Of the 34 gold medalists, Don Opeloge of weightlifting secured three gold medals while Vaipapa Nevo Ioane won one gold in the men's 67kg division. Olivia Borg secured multiple gold medals including the one in the 100m freestyle and another in the 50m butterfly.

The men's rugby league team won gold in the men's rugby league competition, and the mixed open and women's open also secured gold medals in their divisions defeating Papua New Guinea in close finals. Another gold was from Jim Walter of archery.

Other teams have been training at Apia Park.
