Black and white was the order on the streets of Apia as the Moataa Rugby Club marked their centennial celebration with a parade through the township.

Led by the Samoa Police Band, friends, family members, and former and current players of the Moataa Rugby teams flooded the streets.

Joining in the parade were teams competing in the upcoming Moataa 7s tournament this weekend, including the Samoa Deaf Association sevens team.

Caretaker Prime Minister of Samoa Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, in her keynote address, congratulated Moataa for achieving the milestone.

"Moata'a's rugby has produced champions of the sport as well as champions of service, discipline and resilience. Their victories have showcased Samoa to the world and brought pride to our people. Let this centennial celebration remind us that greatness is born from community," she said.

"That tradition, when grounded with value and faith, can carry us forward for another 100 years and more. It is brought to my attention that you have considered the inclusion of the Samoa men's deaf 7s rugby into your 7s rugby tournament as part of your celebration.

"This reflects your support in recognising the commitment of Samoa's Government in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities. I applaud today's event and express gratitude to the village of Moataa and all who have encouraged the sport of rugby. May the next century be as bold as spirited and as unifying as the last. "

Chairman of the 100 years celebration, Tofaeono Iupati Fuata'i, acknowledged Fiame and applauded her for her courage.

"We continue to pray for you as you continue to lead our country. You are our first woman Prime Minister, and you are also the Iron Lady. We watch on social media how you've been leading our country, we thank you for that. We need strong leaders because if our leaders are weak, then so are the people. So, thank you, Prime Minister. And we wish you all the best for the upcoming game you're preparing for."

One of their oldest members, Lilomaiava Taufusi Salesa presented their gift on Tuesday. They then proceeded to the cutting of the cake before they dispersed to return to Moataa for their family day.

Former Moataa rugby player, Tupuola Pasitale Faoagali, said being part of the Moataa rugby team was his pride.

"Coming to Samoa for this celebration is a huge honour for me. A 100-year celebration doesn't happen often, and we don't know whether we will be around for the next one," he said.
