Too strong! Too fast: Marion impressive in TKO win
Marion Faustino Ah Tong has done it again. He won his last fight for 2024 after knocking out Australian Jamie Phillips in the first minute of round one.
They were fighting in the Super Welterweight bout on Friday evening at the Grand Vaudeville.
"Got the win last night, round one TKO. Thank you to Paul Nasari and the team Neutral Corner Promotions for having me on your card again, really appreciate it. Thank you to my coach and team from Jungle Boxing for helping me prepare for this fight," Marion said in his social media post.
"Lastly, thank you for all your messages of support and encouragement. And to my family and friends who came out last night, your support means the world to me. Signing off for this year, looking forward to some rest and downtime with my family."
The 24-year-old was born and raised in Luatuanuu, Samoa but is now residing with his family in Australia. He represented Samoa in the 2020 Summer Olympics, Commonwealth and the Pacific Games.
His head coach, Steven Faoagali said Marion fought well without any mistakes and he had been preparing for this fight for more than two months.
“Tino fought well, no mistakes and was focused even though it was only one minute of the first round! But that’s boxing, whether it is 12 seconds or 12 rounds, you cannot afford to lose focus for a second,” he said.
“Tino prepared for 10 weeks for this fight, and it was not easy trying to find boxers in his weight division willing to fight him. So we had no choice but to accept a fight against a much heavier fighter which was risky, but I had every confidence in Tino’s ability and his hard work in training to perform and get the job done.”
“The referee had to step in and stop the fight only after one minute into the bout when Tino dropped him with a left hook and then subsequently continued with a vicious onslaught of attacks that his opponent had no answer for.”
