Prime Minister confirms Independence Day plan

The Independence Day parade, regarded as the highlight for thousands of people of all ages, will not be happening when Samoa commemorates her 60th Independence Day this year.
Instead, a flag raising ceremony will be hosted at Mulinu'u on Wednesday, 1 June 2022, which will also be the only public holiday for the celebration.
Due to restrictions for COVID-19, only a few officials will be invited to the event.
Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, confirmed the tentative programme during a recent interview, reiterating that the celebration will continue for 12 months.
The Prime Minister said the idea behind the year-long celebration is to ensure everyone is involved in the various events hosted by church groups, villages, Government offices and non-government organisations.
“It is a tribute to our forefathers from all districts who initiated the movement for independence,” she said during press conference on Monday. “We remember their offering and sacrifice.
“It is our hope that conducting celebration in each district will provide golden opportunity for more participation and inclusion of our people while adhering to health measures."
It has been two years since the nation had to observe the independence celebration virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions and State of Emergency Orders.
For June’s celebration, Fiame said there will be no distinguished guests from overseas.
But Cabinet has approved all cultural entertainment and events planned for the 60th independence to be held in September together with the commemoration of the Teuila Festival.
Minister of Finance, Mulipola Anarosa Ale – Molioo recently revealed $300,000 has been allocated in the next financial year for the independence celebration.
Mulipola made the comments on the E.F.K.S. Soalepule programme two weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the Organising Committee is finalising the calendar for the various events and activities for the 12 months long celebration.
The committee has asked the public, organisations and government offices on their planned activities for the 60th birthday celebration from 1st June until the end of May 2023.
According to a press statement on the independence day programme there are no plans from the Government to handout compensation but it is their hope to compile and include all events in a calendar.
