Be responsible, avoid reckless driving: Commissioner

The Acting Police Commissioner has appealed to the community for a "collaborative effort" to promote responsible driving among local motorists.

Acting Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo told the Samoa Observer on Monday that the Police are improving traffic enforcement but there are times where there are blatant cases of recklessness by drivers.

The Acting Commissioner had made the comments after numerous vehicle crashes in the last month.

"But we are not gonna be there all the time on the road, there are times that police won't be there," Auapaau told the Samoa Observer on Monday.

"I say this issue is supposed to be a collaborative issue between the police and the community.

"If you know you don't have enough sleep then don't drive. If you are intoxicated and drinking, then don't drive.”

Motorists who are also feeling fatigued or intoxicated should not be allowed to drive according to the Acting Police Commissioner.

He said that they have discovered that there are a lot of people who police find lack drivers' license and their car has not been registered.

"So right now we are looking at the issue," he said.

Auapaau said that it is supposed to be an effort from everyone, but it is up to the community to be responsible and do the right thing.

"If the police work together with the community, it will be easy and it will decrease the number of incidents," he said.

"We encourage our police to do the right thing, be responsible. If you drink, don't drive the car, don't drink and drive.

"That is also the message that should be given to the community, we should work together with them.

“Be responsible, do the right thing, don't drive the car if you're sleepy, don't drive the car if you're intoxicated."
