A car crash at Saoluafata on Monday involving an unlicensed driver has compelled the Deputy Police Commissioner to remind motorists of the dangers of getting behind the wheel without qualifications.
Papalii Monalist Tiai-Keti also cautioned vehicle owners that they are also complicit in committing an offense if they allow someone without a license to drive their vehicle.
The Deputy Commissioner sounded the warning in an emailed response to questions from the Samoa Observer when asked to provide a status update on a recent car crash at Saoluafata.
"The driver and two other passengers [were taken to the hospital]," she wrote.
"The two passengers were later discharged whilst the driver still remains.
"Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver does not have any driver’s license.
“We remind members of the public that it is an offense against the Road Traffic Ordinance 1960 if you drive a vehicle without a license or do not have a specific license per category of vehicles.
“Owners are also liable if they permit someone to drive in contravention of the R.T.O. (Road Traffic Ordinance)."
According to Papalii, the cause of the accident was due to the driver losing control of the vehicle which crashed into a ditch on the side of the road.
With a spike in traffic-related incidents in Samoa in recent months, the Ministry of Police is urging the public to adhere to traffic regulations.
The Deputy Commissioner then reminded the public of the cost of traffic accidents on families.
"SPPCS wishes to remind the public that no amount of money can bring back loved ones who have died as a result of traffic-related accidents,” she said.
“It is our responsibility as a community to ensure that we do our duties by adhering to the requirements of the law.
“Laws were made to protect everyone including innocent bystanders/pedestrians and all road users. Working together for a safer Samoa.”
The appeal by Papalii follows another fatal car crash last Saturday night next to the Maalauli cemetery in Vailele, which resulted in the death of a man who was returning home after attending a wedding.
