The institute for Samoan engineers awarded 12 scholarships to students of Don Bosco Technical College on Friday.

The Institute of Professional Engineers Samoa (I.P.E.S.) President Aiono Meresaini Siaosi-Laulua said Covid-19 restrictions inspired their organisation to lend a helping hand to schools.

"Especially for students who are studying Maths, Science, and Engineering-related subjects like Joinery, Carpentry, Automotive.

"We have a Golf tournament, where our partners are helping us from abroad and locally to fund the program.

"There are almost 200 members for our society, our subscriptions and our golf tournament funds are now used for the blessings you are receiving today," she added.

Aiono confirmed that they had started with only 10 scholarships at $900 each, but after the ceremony and performances by the students, the Institute added an extra two scholarships of the same value, amounting to $10,800 in total.

The twelve lucky recipients are Mark Godinet, Faleono Sililo, Mose Taliaoa, Ikenasio Peru, Luaipou Tuputala, Stewart Semu, Laauli Patea, Ionatana Tupai, Selau Tagoai, Spencer Mataafa, and the additional two Faataga Ogesaa and Ieremia Faiva.

Principal Su'a Mane Su'a said he is grateful for the recognition by I.P.E.S of their school as this is the first time Don Bosco has received such scholarships. He added that the scholarships were intended for students who were doing well in their studies.

"This is the first time we have received this kind of scholarship. We have five courses here on our campus, we have Automotive, Carpentry and Joinery, Plumbing, Welding, and Electrical. So we selected two students from each course. We are thankful and blessed to have I.P.E.S provide scholarships for these students as it is a great help for their families as well especially during these times of difficulties," he said.

Mark and Faleono were selected for the Electrical course, Mose and Ikenasio were for the Plumbing course, Luaipou and Stewart are in Woodwork, Laauli and Ionatana were for Welding, and Selau and Spencer were for Motor Mechanic.

Mr. Tuputala was the student representative selected to say a few words on behalf of recipients and the school.

"I am grateful to be one of the recipients, this is a huge help for my family.

"I come from a very humble family so this is wonderful news for them. I want to thank I.P.E.S. for providing me with such an opportunity I will not waste it, I will make sure I will use it wisely.

"Thank you to our principal and teachers for always trying to find opportunities for us," he said.

Principal Su'a said it was his hope that the partnership will continue to grow in the future.
