Betham Brother’s Enterprises (B.B.E.) is leading the way in emphasising the importance of health and safety procedures for port workers.

B.B.E’s Operation and Transport Manager, Lorenzo Fepulea'i, said they did this last week with a workshop which focussed on developing a positive health and safety culture for their employees.

B.B.E's Warehouse Administrator and Health and Safety Clerk, Nicole Reed Saufoi, she said B.B.E. is most likely the first shipping line to hold a workshop to discuss matters for health and safety.

“Our workshop that we had on Saturday, we had discussed our health and safety procedures for all our operations teams. There were 55 members who attended the workshop,” she said

“Thirty stevedore labourers, crane-drivers, hatch-men, fore-men, forklift-drivers, container controller, truck driver and SWIRE attendees were all present on the day.”

The workshop conducted was the first trial they’ve done catered specifically for stevedoring and for the operations department. They conducted a disaster management workshop before which catered to their staff only and operations teams.

The workshop outlined matters such as the OHS (Occupational Health & Safety) 2020, regarding restricted working hours, safety gears to be worn at any operations and port rules and restrictions for all to follow.

Identifying hazardous zones and the risks known was also discussed during the workshop.

“We had a break-down of our working environment in terms of the equipments used, and operational duties,” Nicole

“We had a few videos presented on the day to inform our employees about the risks and hazardous areas at the port to avoid incidents.”

There was also a practical demonstration of full P.P.E (Personal Protective Equipment) which concluded with training on equipment handling which included twist locks, container stackers and other equipments.

According to Nicole, the basic for improving a health and safety procedure is to encourage the staff members to always be ready prior to every operation.

“We encourage them to have their gears on time with them at all time during their call for operation,” she added
