A man accused of attacking and injuring two people with a machete at the Savalalo Fish Market last month has sought to be released from custody.

The defendant, Tagaloa Maugaloto Palu, appeared for his first criminal mention before Supreme Court Justice Leiataualesa Daryl Clarke last week.

He appeared again via video link on Monday morning, seeking release from custody.

Tagaloa is being held at the Tanumalala Prison.

The prosecutor in the case, Lucymaria Sio Ofoia, from the Attorney General’s Office told the court they had not received a bail application from the defence.

Tagaloa is being represented by defence attorney Leota Tima Leavai but Maria Tuimalealiifano appeared in place of Leota for the bail hearing.

The prosecution opposed bail for the defendant.

Tagaloa is facing numerous charges: one count of attempted murder, one count of being armed with a dangerous weapon and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm.

He is accused of attacking two people with a machete and causing them serious injuries when he went on a rampage at the fish market in Apia.

The violent incident was captured on video and shared on social media by a witness.

Justice Leiataualesa has adjourned the matter to 11am on 17 July.

Tagaloa was remanded in custody.
