Mother of seven, Noluama Fetausiai, and her family have been on the move since they were evicted by the authorities from their village three years ago.

They finally settled in her husband's home village on the west coast of Upolu, over 30 kilometres from the Samoan capital Apia.

The family has a small house made out of wood with a corrugated iron roof and tarpaulin, which the family hung on the side of their traditionally-designed home, which can act as a shield during bad weather or keep them safe at night.

In order to access the family’s home, you will have to go off the main road, through a dirt road that goes inland to see it perched in the bush surrounded by a plantation.

“After being evicted, we have been moving around until we established this small home for our family three years ago,” she said.

“My husband and I are both unemployed but we had jobs before. At the moment we work together in developing our plantation so we can provide for the children. And planting taro and banana have become a hobby and passion.”

The family is also not connected to the village’s water supply system and rely on their neighbour’s generosity.

“We do not have our own supply of water but we use our neighbour's water supply which we try and get some form of money to pay for the water bills,” she added.

Mrs. Fetausiai said that due to their financial difficulties, the couple could not afford to build a proper house.

“We could only build a home from the resources available and building a house in an open Samoan style was our only option,” she reiterated. “But as a mother of seven, I consider the safety and wellbeing of my children, especially I have young infants as well.

“I am ashamed to admit that we do need assistance in a variety of areas with shelter, water, and waste facilities but we lack financial support.”
