A taxi driver who fell asleep at the wheel and drove into a ditch at Tuanaimato on Talimatau Road on Thursday was lucky that he and his passengers escaped with little-to-no injuries.

The taxi driver, who does not own the vehicle, said that there were a total of three people in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

When the Samoa Observer arrived on the scene on Thursday it was unclear where the two passengers had gone.

When asked about what had happened, the taxi driver indicated that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel of the car while driving, after rising early in the morning to drive from a rural area.

The accident happened shortly after 2pm. The Police were already at the scene of the crash investigating the incident when the Samoa Observer arrived a short time later.

Apart from a smashed windshield on the left side of the car and broken left rear mirror, the taxi was spared serious damage; it fell into a ditch matching the vehicle's width.

Passersby and nearby employees congregated around the scene of the accident.

Within an hour's time, the taxi was pulled from the ditch.
