Cyclone warning issued for Samoa

A warning for Tropical Cyclone Wasi has now been officially declared for Samoa. 

The warning was issued by the Samoa Met Office in its latest weather update on Saturday evening.

The Met Office predicts that if Cyclone Wasi continues on its projected track, it will relocate "at about 85km (46nm) southwest of Tafitoala, Safata, or 105 km (57nm) south southwest of Apia, at 2am on Sunday morning.

Tropical Cyclone Wasi was located at 13.7 South, 173.6 West or at about 107 km (98nm) west-southwest of Asau and 179 km (106nm) west of Apia at 2:00pm on Saturday afternoon.

“The system is slow moving east southeast at a speed of 8km/hour,” according to the Meteorology Office.

The winds close to the centre of Tropical Cyclone Wasi is around 83kph. 

Saturday night and Sunday will experience periods of rain with heavy falls and few thunderstorms. 

“Northwesterly winds of 63-87 kph gust up to 95kph at times. Combine waves and swells of 3-5m. 

“Potential Impacts: Heavy downpours with poor visibility, strong and gusty winds with flying objects, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges, strong river outflow and landslides, pooling near roadsides and waterways.

Other impacts could include strong currents as well as rough seas and coastal inundation and uproot breakable trees.

The wind, heavy rain, and flood warnings remain in effect for all of Samoa.

And also coastal flood advisory and small crafts and alia fishing boats advisory is also enforced for Samoa.

Samoa Airways have advised that due to current weather conditions they have closed their flight services for American Samoa on Saturday.

Samoa Fiafia Park has announced on their Facebook page that their services are closed until the cyclone passes.

Foggy and poor visibility was experienced in parts of Malololelei.

Tropical Depression TD10F is now upgraded to Tropical Cyclone WASI at 2.00pm this afternoon and was located at 13.7South, 173.6West or at about 107 km (98nm) west southwest of Asau and 179 km (106nm) west of Apia at 220000 UTC or 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. The system is slow moving east southeast at a speed of 8km/hr. Winds close to the centre of Tropical Cyclone Wasi is around 83kph.

If TC Wasi continues on its projected track it will relocate at about 85km (46nm) southwest of Tafitoala or 105 km (57nm) south southwest of Apia at 2.00 am tomorrow morning.

Periods of rain with heavy falls and few thunderstorms.
Northwesterly winds of 63-87 kph gust up to 95kph at times. Combine waves and swells of 3-5m.
