Samoa was on Friday evening braced for yet more wild weather and the possibility that storm fronts off the country's north and eastern coasts could intensify into a cyclone today or next week.

“The low pressure system that was expected to develop to the northwest of Samoa by Saturday morning remains a concern for safety,” a Government spokesman said late on Friday evening. 

“This low pressure still has a potential to intensify into a Tropical Depression as it moves over Samoa by [...] Sunday night. 

“Widespread rain with heavy downpours and strong winds has a high confidence to impact Samoa.”

The weather front to the northwest is said to be predicted only with “low confidence” to become a category one cyclone. 

But forecasters are predicting another depression, to the south of the country, is expected to become a category one cyclone by mid-next week.

“There is a high confidence to reach Cat 1 by Wednesday night,” the spokesman for Samoa Meteorological Services said. 

“It lies just less than 200 kilometres to the south of Samoa.”

That low pressure system is forecast to develop over the Fijian island of Rotuma on Monday morning and move eastwards toward Samoa.
